Katie's musical life started in York when she began learning the alto saxophone, which was soon followed by flute and then clarinet. She then went to Bath Spa University to complete her BA Music, with specific interest in performance, teaching, and Gamelan, in which she graduated in 2015 with 2:1.  She is now currently studying her MA in Community Music at The University of York under the guidance of Bruce Cole.

Since her undergraduate degree, Gamelan has played a key role in Katie’s life. She began helping to teach the University’s beginner ensemble after her first year, which resulted in her being able to run workshops for the department. She is now working under the leadership of Emily Crossland in The Sound of Bronze, a project aimed at youth in Yorkshire.

Katie is an experienced teacher and is working with York Music Service and privately to provide woodwind tuition to adults, young adults, and children. Her main philosophy in teaching is ensuring her pupils enjoy and understand the music in which they are learning. It is not just enough to play the notes on the page, but to fully appreciate the thought which goes into music.

In performance, Katie’s focus is orchestras for musical theatre and opera. She has played in a wide variety of shows, from Legally Blonde, to The Marriage of Figaro, to the lesser know Urinetown. She is able to play across all variants of flute, clarinet, and saxophone with a usual specification for the higher pitched end.
